CROWS COME UP TRUMPS WITH TOP-DRAW DISPLAY.

CROWS COME UP TRUMPS WITH TOP-DRAW DISPLAY.

Malcolm Boyes2 Oct 2016 - 18:32

Despite having to shuffle the pack due to suspension, unavailability and injury, the Crows turn in an ace performance.

The Hoops weren't sure if they should stick or twist.
Many of us who saw the home against Corinthian recently, where we played some of the best football a Crowborough Athletic first team has played for many a year, would have thought when leaving the ground that it may be a few years more before a performance like that is equalled or even surpassed.
However, those of us who made our longest away trip of the season to see the team play at The Charles Ground against Deal Town, were rewarded with a sparkling display from the Crows, especially in the first half, when the speed, movement and passing from everyone of the players was top-draw.
Even though Muggeridge had to shuffle the pack due to Walder being suspended for this game and centre back Turner not being available for selection, their replacements, Crabb and Trotter, both put in very good performances and the change in personnel didn't upset the Crows rhythm in any way.
Indeed it was Trotter who got the first Crows goal after 26 minutes, deftly tucking the ball away with his foot from a Muggeridge cross, 1-0 to the Crows and a deserved lead for the pressure exerted on the Deal Town defence.
The cause of the home defence was not helped when Bagley, one of their centre-halves, had to leave the field with an injury of some sorts and he was replaced by another Coyne, Alex, in the 23rd minute.
The away side kept the ball in the home half for a large part of the first 45 minutes and it wasn't long before a free-flowing move saw Carrington set Attwood up for a neat finish and it became 2-0 after 26 minutes.
Deal's main threat came from long balls and free-kicks aimed at their large but rather immobile number 9 Conner Coyne, who did work himself in to the ground throughout the 90 minutes but was superbly marshalled by Trotter, playing his first full game of the season since returning to the club.
It became 3-0 in the 36th minute as a he home side gave away a free-kick some 25 yards out and Treleaven became the joker in the pack, putting the ball in to the net direct from the free-kick and although Waymark in the home goal got his hand to the ball, he couldn't prevent it going in to the net.
Many of those watching, both home and away fans, couldn't see a way back for the home side as the Crows carried on dominating possession and keeping the pressure up on a beleaguered home side. It became even more unlikely in the 44th minute, Attwood repaid the compliment to set Carrington up and he coolly put the chance away for 4-0 to the Crows following another great team move.
The second-half was not as impressive for the Crows, it was always likely to be the case, at 4-0 up at half-time it's natural that the shine comes off the pack for a while and of course, the home side probably had a harsh word or two said to them in the dressing room.
Deal did up their effort a bit, started to fight for each and every ball more than they did in the first but never really created any clear chances, Ellis only really having to catch crosses in to the penalty area although he did make one smart save from the home side's number 11, Miller, during the half.
The Crows cause was not helped as Tear had to leave the field in the 53rd minute with an injury, Slocombe coming on as his replacement and although Slocombe is more than capable of playing in that position, any change does mean a period of settlement is required.
Deal scored their only goal from the penalty spot in the 57th minute and to say most people were mystified as to why it was given would be an understatement, even their management team who had been haranguing the referee all match, couldn't see why it had been given. Carey received a yellow card, presumably for the foul, and Hill, the Deal captain, put the ball away to make it 4-1 to the Crows.
In the 60th minute Carrington went off with a slight knock and he was replaced by Newman who plays in our reserve side managed by Jimmy Anderson. Again, a settling in period was required as the shape of the side was arranged to suit the personnel on the pitch. Newman did pick up a yellow card though for a late challenge in the 58th minute.
The home side replaced Walsh with Adams in the 64th minute as they looked to try and score a second goal and freshen things up a bit by getting some fresh legs on to the pitch.
Gradually the Crows got back in to the game and started to get their game together again, although another substitution saw Clarke go off and Shea coming on in a straight swap in the 70th minute.
The Deal team were by now visibly tiring having chased the ball and our players for large chunks of the match, therefore, they made their last substitution in the 74th minute, Smith coming on for full-back Scott.
Chances started to come once more for the Crows and it seemed only a matter of time before number 5 arrived and it happened in the 82nd minute, all due to the hard work by our Man of the Match, Zac Attwood. Following some great work from a throw-in he squared the ball across the area for Muggeridge to dink the ball over the diving Waymark and in to the net, 5-1, game over.
However, Treleaven decided that one great free-kick wasn't enough and so he had to repeat it again in the 87th minute, curling a beauty in to the corner of the net from around 20 yards out, 6-1 and this time it was definitely game over.
There's no doubt that this squad has skill in spades, has plenty of heart, some real diamonds and as a club they make us proud when they play as they did against Deal Town. As the away fans shuffled off home they had smiles on their faces due to the fact that they had witnessed another top-draw performance from the team in red, which by the way, still remains unbeaten.
