BIDDLECOMBE IS THE JOKER IN THE PACK THIS TIME.

Malcolm Boyes3 Apr 2016 - 19:32

Deal Town pay the penalty in the end as a Biddlecombe double brings the points to the Community Stadium.

As I couldn't go and my deputy match reporter never made it to the Charles Ground, I've taken the match report from the Deal Town website. It obviously is their personal view of the game, as it is mine when I write from a Crows perspective. For those of you who went, you'll be able to judge for yourself if their report is fair or not.

The Hoops had to endure “one of those days” as they missed out on the chance of leapfrogging their Sussex visitors in the table.
Manager Derek Hares summed up Saturday’s 90 minutes of frustration for his side, saying: “I couldn’t fault the boys’ work rate or commitment but it was just one of those games when nothing seemed to fall for us.”
And Deal’s day to forget was confirmed when Danny Smith was sent off midway through the second half for arguing with local linesman Matt McCaughan over Crowborough’s winning goal.
Yet it had all started so brightly for the Hoops who could have gone in front inside the opening 30 seconds when Connor Coyne was denied by Crows’ keeper Dan Smith, and Deal’s fast start continued for the next 15 minutes during which Sam Staunton and Coyne again both went close.
But, having survived that early pressure, Crowborough then snatched the lead through an 18th-minute penalty. Gianfranco Mici was tripped just inside the box by Grant Bagley and Josh Biddlecombe blasted home the spot kick.
Deal never quite regained their early momentum after that setback and, as the first half progressed, the action became increasingly niggly and fragmented.
But the goal the Hoops deserved for their first half efforts finally arrived five minutes before the break. Bagley saw his initial header from a Kristin Gregory corner strike the woodwork, and when the Crows failed to clear the ball was knocked back in by Luke Bigginton for Joe Anderson to head home at the far post.
That raised hopes among the Hoops supporters of better things to come in the second half and Anderson, Deal’s man-of-the-match, almost scored with another header within two minute of the restart.
But the Crows always looked dangerous on their fast breaks out of defence and, after John Sparks had produced one save low down to deny Biddlecombe, the game’s decisive incident arrived on 62 minutes. Biddlecombe fired home his 25th goal of the season but the Deal defenders were convinced it was from an offside position and Smith made clear his feelings to McCaughan, who called over the referee and Smith was shown a red card.
Down to 10 men and already missing five regulars through suspension or unavailability, the Hoops were now up against it and Sparks produced a couple of brave stops in the closing stages while at the other end Smith denied Deal a late equaliser with an excellent flying save from the hard-working Anderson.
