The Crows began 2023 in some style, coming out on top against Steyning Town, who started the day in 4th, with a stylish 4-0 win.
Before the game, it’s fair to say conditions didn’t indicate a classic was on the cards, the pitch was a bit soft - but easily passed a pitch inspection, but the wind was also a bit gusty - not ideal for a game of football!
Team news, with Cameron Hall injured and Martin Grant away, Matt Larkin stepped in for his debut. John Sinclair was serving his suspension with Charlie Watkins coming into the side. Jack Mayhew also returned to the lineup in place of Leo Vowles.
Steyning Town started the brighter of the 2 teams, with the first 10 minutes seeing Muggsys men barely get out of their own half - clearly rusty from limited game time over the winter so far, but 13 minutes in Lucas Murrain and Harry Forster combined to create the spark that the Crows needed - Murrain brought the ball down and with a neat layoff, Forster had a seemingly impossible task ahead of him but he glided past 3 Steyning defenders, before placing his shot low to the keepers right, 1-0 and lift off. The Crows then began to assert themselves on the game, with the visitors trying to retain possession in the middle third, but The Crows looked to run at their opponents every time they got the ball. It was on the stroke of half time that the effort bore fruit again for Muggsy’s men. Skipper Tom Boddy made a superb clearance right up to Harvey Killick, who drove the ball forward with real determination before crossing it to Lucas Murrain who made it 2.
Sometimes 2-0 at half time can be a dangerous lead, but Muggsy sent out the lads fired up, and with an attacking mentality - just 6 minutes after the restart and it was more of the same with Harvey Killick getting the ball clear on the right and finding Lucas Murrain on his own in the box, who cooly finished for his second of the afternoon.
The game then balanced out somewhat with Steyning seeing more of the ball, but for all of their probing, The Crows backline held firm and didn’t look too panicked. Steyning did have one chance, a floated in corner was met by a Steyning player, but Callum Gallie was there on the near post to head the ball away.
As we rolled into the last 20 minutes, Crowborough seemed to get the bit between their teeth again, creating more chances - with the excellent Harvey Killick (again!) clear on the right, looked up to see Tom Pearson free around the penalty spot, picked him out and Pearson blasted home.
Muggsy rang the changes with a few subs to get some fresh legs on and make sure that we kept a well deserved clean sheet, with Welsh, Joy, Vowels and London and the returning Salter all getting valuable minutes.
Full Time: 4-0
Man of the Match: Harvey Killick
