Brave Crows defeat in cup quarter final

Brave Crows defeat in cup quarter final

Michael Barrett15 Feb 2023 - 21:04

Muggsys men led 2-0 and dominated large parts of the game before falling to defeat to Conference South Worthing

The Crows came into the Sussex Senior Cup quarter finals knowing that it would be a tough ask to beat a Worthing side battling for promotion 3 leagues above us.

Worthing put out a strong side, with 5 changes from their last game vs St Albans, with one of those changes being a loanee from Swindon Town.

The Crows started brightly, seemingly unnerved by the occasion, we came out on top in the early exchanges and as the game began to settle the chances started to come with Jack Mayhew bursting through on the right before taking a mean shot at goal, stinging the keeper’s hands, with Ollie Hyland shooting just over the bar shortly afterwards.

Whilst The Crows dominated, Worthing did have their chances with Martin Grant making some excellent saves to keep the scoreline level.

With 32 minutes on the clock, the unthinkable happened, the hard working Harvey Killick played a hopeful long ball forward for the tenacious Harry Forster, who beat the stranded Worthing goalkeeper to the ball, to coolly finish from just outside the right hand side of the box. 1-0 Crows and the momentum stayed with Muggsys men as both sides headed down the tunnel for half time.

And the second half started as the first ended, minutes after the restart, The Crows won a free kick just outside the edge of The Worthing penalty area. Rory Salter stood over the ball, the whistle went and he blasted it straight into top bins, the keeper helpless to get to it as it whizzed past his left side!

Worthing made some changes, and as the lads began to tire, the home side started to assert themselves.

Their first goal coming in the 54th minute, The Crows held firm until the 68th minute equaliser and the Worthing tails were up as they scored their third in the 73rd minute to take the lead. The Crows had their chances to get level, another Salter free kick cane close but in the 82nd minute Worthing got their 4th to kill the tie. The lads carried on battling for every ball but goals in the 87th and 90th minutes hit us for 6.

The scoreline harsh on our brave Crows - for 60 minutes the better team, many would argue we deserved the win over the 90, or at least a draw, but we move on and learn from it, the next game comes round quickly, and an opportunity to get back to winning ways. Up The Crows!
