Clinical finishing the difference.
There's not a lot to say about this game in truth, although it was a very entertaining match throughout, played in heavy rain from start to finish, both clubs did their best to play football from start to finish.
The Crows were rather depleted for this game as the distance between the two clubs made it impossible for many of our players and supporters to get there at all. I personally left at 3:50pm and it still took me two hours to get there. For those that had to leave work first before they could travel it meant they could either make it or not.
Treleaven, Attwood, Walder, Tear, Ellis, Phipp and Unwin were not in attendance and Clarke and Carrington arrived just as the match was kicking off. Therefore, it was a rather makeshift side that took to the field and matters weren't helped when they went behind after only 3 minutes. Horncastle being awarded the goal although the Crows insist the ball never crossed the line however, the assistant referee who was not directly in line awarded the goal and the Crows were 1-0 down.
The rest of the half was end to end with the Crows dominating possession and the corner count but our finishing was not as good as it could've been and the home side always looked dangerous on the break.
Half time was reached with the Crows 1-0 down but optimistic about their chances of getting back in to the game in the second half. However, in the 56th minute it became 2-0 as the home side capitalised on a fortunate deflection by the referee which allowed them to break from the edge of their own area and Simmonds was able to slot the ball home.
Only 6 minutes later Simmonds scored his second and the Lions third direct from a free kick about 20 yards out therefore, 2-0 became 3-0 and the Crows had a mountain to climb.
Goldsmith and Bishop were replaced by Clarke and Carrington as the Crows looked for a way back in to the game. As the Crows pressed Woollers picked up a yellow card and Muggeridge, Pearson, Carrington and Crabb, twice, either went close or had efforts well saved by the home side's 'keeper.
In the end the pressure paid off as the ball found Turner at the back post and he volleyed the ball in to the roof of the net for 3-1 to Pagham in the 70th minute.
Their goalie then had to make two great saves in quick succession from Crabb to prevent the Crows pulling it back to 3-2 but the home side had chances themselves to make the game safe but they weren't taken. Turner picked up a yellow for dissent in the 80th minute and despite all the effort the Crows put in, it looked as the result would remain at 3-1 to the home as we entered added on time.
However, in the 93rd minute Barton headed the ball in to the net to make it 3-2 unfortunately though, time ran out and the Crows were out of the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup for 2017/18.
