CROWS DON'T NEED OVERTIME TO GET THROUGH ON THIS OCCASION.

Malcolm Boyes10 Nov 2016 - 11:39

Just for a change extra-time was not needed to overcome Peacehaven & Telscombe on Tuesday evening.

58 goals scored in last 17 matches.
That's now 14 wins on the trot, 16 wins out of 17 matches and the only blot on the landscape is the 1-1 draw away to Rochester United back on 17th September 2016 where we were 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go.
A total of 58 goals have been slid past the opposition goalkeepers in those matches at an average of just under 3.5 goals a game. Of course, we mustn't forget the defence during this great run, they've played their part and during these 17 matches they've only let in 18 goals, scoring 3 goals and only conceding 1 goal in any game will give you the points.
Not a bad run at any level of football and of course the goals have been spread throughout the squad which is always a good thing and it shows that every player is doing well when called upon.
As for the game on Tuesday it was definitely two teams who tried to play football on the night, something which can't be said of late for a few teams who have played us, their way of trying to stem our side has been perhaps more suited to the ring used in WWF but credit to Peacehaven & Telscombe who gave us a good game by keeping the ball on the deck and moving around efficiently.
The statistics confirm the match was an attacking affair, both sides having 10 shots each, 3 corners apiece, no yellow or red cards, 7 offsides and only 14 free kicks in the 90 minutes. We've seen more free kicks awarded in the first 10 minutes than the 14 on Tuesday, which goes to show if both sides play with the same attitude the referee doesn't have a lot to do.
Indeed, the visitors had the first effort at goal, Ellis saving well in the first minute from Wilkins and both sides had chances to take the lead in the first 10 minutes however, the visitors should have gone in front in the 12th minute, Ford caught the Crows defence out, rounded Ellis but saw his shot from a narrow angle rebound off the post to safety.
Only a minute later that miss was to prove costly for Peacehaven as the Crows went 1-0 up, a long kick from Ellis landed at the unmarked Carrington some 22 yards out and his superb lob over Hawkins landed nicely in the visitors net, much to the delight of everyone involved with the Crows.
Little did anyone know at the time was that this would be Carrington's last involvement in the game as he was replaced by Boddy in the 16th minute due to a slight knee strain sustained just before he scored. This meant a shuffle around of some players as Barton was moved in to the midfield and Muggeridge went up front to partner Attwood and this move means that Muggeridge has played in practically every position on the pitch this season for the Crows except goalkeeper.
The visitors made it 1-1 in the 20th minute, Wiltshire, their best player, sliding a neat through ball for Marshall to run on to before lifting the ball over the diving Ellis into the net. It takes a good move these days to breach the Crows defence and this was the only time they really opened up our defence in the whole game.
Attwood had a terrific shot saved by Hawkins in the 25th minute, knocking the ball on to a post before grabbing the rebound just in front of the on-rushing Attwood. Muggeridge was the next to have a couple of shots at goal as the Crows gradually took control of the game, one effort going just over the bar and the other saved by Hawkins, definitely the busier of the two 'keepers.
Trotter then went off injured in the 34th minute, Allen coming on in his place and once he settled down and the nerves disappeared, he had a very good game.
As half time approached, bearing in mind there would be quite a bit of stoppage time to add on due to Carrington and Trotters injuries, the Crows were hoping to grab another goal and in the 45th minute a great move down the Peacehaven left, saw McArdle, Attwood and Walder combining well on the edge of the area before Attwood was able to slide the ball past Hawkins and into the net, 2-1 at half time.
The second half surprisingly was a bit more less exciting, both sides still trying to play football but the final pass was missing or defenders just managed to cut the ball off from reaching the respective forwards thus, clear chances were few in number.
However, in the 72nd minute, a great slide rule pass by McArdle to Muggeridge saw him clean through on goal and from the edge of the area he gave Hawkins the eye before placing the ball in the right hand corner of Hawkins' goal, 3-1 and Crows cruising.
Phillips and Pestana went off in the 78th minute, Avis and Sendonaris replacing them as the visitors looked for an unlikely way back in to the game. One of the Sussex substitutes, Sendonaris hit the post with a header when well placed, probably should have done better in truth.
McArdle was replaced in the 84th minute, Salter coming on and the visitors also made their last substitution only a minute later, Wilkins going off and Radley-Martin coming on as they tried to get something out of the game.
In the end it finished 3-1, our average score per game over the last 17 matches and the winning run carries on. All the players deserve credit for what they are doing out on the pitch every Saturday and Tuesday evening, the whole squad have been great, long may it continue.
Zac Attwood was named the Crow's Man of the Match for his non-stop display throughout the game and the nomination was richly deserved.
