Visitors not to be taken lightly.
Our visitors for this Buildbase FA Vase Second Qualifying Round tie, Gravesham Borough, currently lie 13th in the SCEFL First Division table having played seven league fixtures, winning two of them, drawing three and losing two. During those games they have scored 12 goals and conceded 14.
However, they have had some good results since the season started, drawing 2-2 away at SCEFL First Division leaders Rusthall FC was one and they only just lost 3-2 at home recently to a fellow Premier Division side, Croydon FC, in the Kent Senior Trophy. Their two wins have come at home to Crockenhill 5-1 and against Phoenix Sports Reserves 1-0 whilst their two defeats have been at the hands of Glebe at home 3-1 and Kent Football United away 5-0.
They entered the FA Cup this season and went out at the first hurdle, just as we did, losing 5-2 away at Epsom & Ewell. They have just entered in to a ground-share agreement with Chatham Town so if a replay is needed we'll be heading off to Maidstone Road for the match and as a matter of interest their nickname is The Boro. This is their first game in the FA Vase this season as they received a bye for the First Qualifying Round.
Whilst it may be Premier against First Division we cannot treat them any different to Corinthian FC who we played at home on Tuesday evening, they have every right to expect that we take them seriously and we'll have to play well if we wish to progress to the First Round Proper.
Let's hope we all see a good game anyway, played in the right spirit and may the best team win on the day.
Here's a brief history of the side called Gravesham Borough now but who have had a few names in their past life.
The club was established in 1927 and was originally known as Bowater Thames and joined the Kent County League in 1971. In 1973 they changed their name to Bowaters and three years later they changed their name again to Bowater Sports.
The 1985–86 campaign saw the club finish as winners of the Senior Division of the western section of the Kent County League. The following season saw the club play under its fourth different name, this time it was changed to Bowater Scott Sports & Social.
In 1987 the club again change its name to Scott Sports and Social, their fifth title. In 1992 the Kent County League was restructured so that the top teams in the east and west sections would now play each other in the newly formed Premier Division and the club was placed in this new division.
The club stayed in the Premier Division until the end of the 1994–95 campaign when they finished bottom of the league and were relegated to Division One West. The club in 1996 again changed its name, for the sixth time, to Beauwater. They achieved promotion back to the Premier Division when they finished as runners-up in Division One West at the end of the 1999–2000 campaign.
In 2005 the club changed their name to Fleet Leisure, that's seven times now, when the sports and social club the team is based at was taken over by Fleet Leisure Ltd. At the end of the 2012–13 campaign after finishing fourth in the Premier Division the club gained promotion to the Kent Invicta Football League.
For the 2014-15 season the club changed its name from Fleet Leaisure to Gravesham Borough, so they are now on their eigth different moniker and I'm sure most fans will hope that their name now will last for a good few years. The 2016–17 season saw the club enter the FA Cup for the first time in their history when they entered the competition in the preliminary qualification round.
