A GOOD WIN IN THE END.

A GOOD WIN IN THE END.

Malcolm Boyes24 Aug 2016 - 17:39

We now have peace, heaven and we need to tell someone we won a cup game.

Even if it needed extra-time.
With five changes from our last league game, the Crows faced an in-form home side who are going well in the Emirates FA Cup, having just beaten Haywards Heath on Saturday in the preliminary round, although they have lost both of their league games so far.
Overall, the first half seemed to follow a usual pattern that most modern day football matches do, plenty of effort, little time, inaccurate passing and snatched chances. Time and space is limited for any player and therefore, the quality of play we witnessed was not as good as it could have been.
However, the Crows had the lions share of possession and the better of the chances but neither 'keeper was tested that severely, so half time was reached with a 0-0 scoreline and all spectators hoped that the second half was going to be better than the first.
The second half, was in truth, better than the first period, there was more football being played, not so many long balls and the passing from both sides improved as the half wore on. Their stand-out player on the night, Cameron Wiltshire, started to get things going for the home side, although he didn't know that later on, he'd be both a villain and a hero in the space of a few minutes.
Unfortunately, chances were not taken as and when they came along by either side and the threat of extra-time looked a near certainty as time ticked away. Biddlecombe went off to be replaced by Attwood and Pearson, who played upfront with Josh, took a knock and was substituted by Henry Muggeridge.
In the end, referee Mallows blew the final whistle and both teams now knew that they had another 30 minutes to get a result or the thought of the dreaded penalty kick scenario would put added pressure on all of the players.
We didn't have to wait too long for the first bit of excitement to happen in extra-time, as the home side were awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute. Up stepped Wiltshire to take it but fortunately for us Crows, his well hit penalty hitting the underside of the bar, bouncing down out from the goal and eventually being cleared to safety.
So instead of being 1-0 down, it's still 0-0 and all to play for. Only 3 minutes later Shea had a shot which rebounded back off the post and Muggeridge appeared to have an easy tap-in, unfortunately, he put the effort wide from inside the six yard box.
In the 99th minute the Crows were awarded a penalty of their own, Clarke being brought down by Freeman, a challenge that earned him a yellow card, and Attwood slotted the resultant spot kick home and the Crows had a 1-0 lead.
This lifted the Crows and they started to pin Peacehaven & Telscombe back near their own area, although the pressure was released somewhat when Shea took out their player near the goal line, a tackle that duly saw the referee raise his yellow card.
The second period of extra time found the Crows 2-0 up in the 107th minute, a neat one-two between Carey and Muggeridge, saw the latter coolly finish from a tight angle and the sighs of relief from the Crow supporters was audible enough for all to hear.
Only 2 minutes later though, 2-0 became 2-1, the home side being awarded another penalty following a Crabb tackle, which also earned him a yellow card, and this time, Wiltshire makes no mistake from the spot.
By now the referee was starting to see every tackle as a foul and anything said that he could hear to be dissent and yellow cards were being flashed around quicker than a cyclists lamp flickers in the dead of night.
Williams and our own Wayne Clarke incur the wrath of the referee and then only minutes after being booked for the first time, Williams says something to him and it results in the second yellow card and then the required red being waved high in the night sky.
The Crows eventually winning 2-1 and if there is a downside to the result it's that we had six players booked on the night, which will incur a fine and four of the bookings were for dissent, a booking which is so avoidable in reality and in the end costs the players more than a yellow for a tackle.
Still, we're through to the next round where we'll be on our travels again down to the coast when we play Seaford Town at a date yet to be decided.
By the way, if anyone is wondering about the strap-line above, those who saw the team notice board at the Unibet Arena will easily understand it.
