Good win against a strong East Grinstead Town side.
The Crows finished their pre-season games with a fine win against a very strong East Grinstead Town FC at the Community Stadium on Saturday and over the 90 minutes most people, I'm sure, would agree that they fully deserved to come out of the match victorious.
The Crows too had a strong squad out, although Collick, Boddy, Treleaven, Butler, Carey, Baitup and Tear were not available to be selected, either due to holidays or family commitments or in the cases of Carey, Baitup and Tear, it was slight knocks that kept them either on the bench or the stand.
The first 15 minutes of the game was definitely like a couple of pugilists sparring with each other in the early rounds, the ball spending much of the time being fought over in the middle of the park, however, it was the Crows who landed the first significant punch when Mici threaded a magnificent through to Muggeridge who had broken free from the Town defenders in the 17th minute.
Racing in to the Wasp's area he drew the Town 'keeper out towards him and shot at goal however, between the goalie and a defender they managed to stop the ball going in to the net, only to see Attwood in the right position at the right time to tap the ball in to the empty net.
This set back spurred the Wasps on and only 2 minutes later they had a header from a corner cleared of the line by Salter, although the Crows did go straight back up the other end themselves and from a free kick Turner had a free header which he put wide from some 8 yards out.
The visitors then started to take control of the game for around 15/20 minutes and got the equaliser they deserved at the time in the 30th minute, good work down the Crows right led to the ball being squared to Payne who tucked the ball away nicely from around 15 yards out.
It was no more than they deserved but as our goal seemed to spur them on, so it worked after they scored and the Crows started to gain the upper hand again. The passing returned for the home side and after 36 minutes they went in front again.
An excellent flowing, passing movement from their own penalty area up to the Wasps area ended up with Mici dancing in to the area before having a shot deflected by a defender and seeing it hitting the back of the net for 2-1.
Muggeridge then had a 1-on-1 with the Town goalie in the 39th minute but his shot went just wide and the half time whistle blew with the Crows in the lead.
At half time Jack Turner was replaced by Steve Smith and as in many cases in pre-season matches when numerous substitutions are made, the fluency goes out of the game and whilst the Crows had the lions share of possession, clear chances at either end were few and far between.
After 52 minutes Josh Biddlecombe came on for Wayne Clarke but it then took a great one-handed save by Smith in the Crows' goal after 62 minutes, to keep the score at 2-1, the Town player having a free header some 8 yards out and everyone watching thought it was a goal, until that is Smith palmed it over the bar.
The Town stopper then had to make a smart save from a Mici free kick in the 65th minute and in the 70th minute, Mici left the field of play as he was replaced by Carrington.
Shea then replaced Ridley in the 79th minute and the Town were doing exactly the same during the second 45 minutes, replacing one player with another to give their squad game time as well.
2-1 became 3-1 in the 84th minute, great work by Carrington initially, spreading the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, finding Muggeridge who was well supported by Salter and after a neat one-two, the ball was squared back to Carrington on the edge of the area and he slid the ball in to the far corner, much to the delight of everyone associated with the Crows.
Therefore, the game finished with the Crows winning 3-1, a good work out and a good win. The squad looks strong this season but the first real test will come at the Community Stadium next Saturday, 6th August, when the Crows are at home to Farnham Town in the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round, the kick off is 3:00pm.
