Impressive squad performance overall.
On a very hot day last Saturday both the first team and reserve team squads travelled to the Trafalgar Ground to play Newhaven FC in a double-header friendly fixture.
You can't tell much about any opposition in a friendly game as you have no idea as to the relative strength of the opposition and who they have or don't have within their squad.
Our hosts are traditionally a strong outfit and they showed that on Saturday, especially in the first 45 minutes which were the most competitive out of the 90 minutes overall.
The home side took the lead in the 6th minute, former Crow Elliott Wood capatilising on a defensive error to fire them in front, however in the 11th minute parity was restored when Smith headed in a Carey corner. It became 2-1 to the Crows in the 21st minute, Treleaven firing in a shot which hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line, the assistant referee informing the referee that it had indeed crossed the line.
Only 5 minutes later, Robinson made it 2-2 from the penalty spot after trialist goalkeeper, Nlate, brought down the forward inside the area as he broke clear.
Many changes were made by the Crows at half time and during the second half, especially as they had 19 players to select from, and these changes, plus what appeared to us, our superior fitness, led to the Crows dominating the second period.
Chances came and went but eventually, Attwood put one away in the 76th minute for 3-2, Biddlecombe made it 4-2 in the 85th minute and the Crows final goal arrived in the 89th minute.
Overall, a good squad workout with some players still missing and now they're back others will be going on their holidays before we hit our first competitive match in the FA Cup at home to Farnham Town FC on Saturday, 6th August.
The reserve team ran out easy winners against their Newhaven FC counterparts, 8-1, scoring four goals in each half and again with plenty of players to select from, our fitness was generally better than the home side's even though player for player the squads were of a similar age range.
There's no doubt that both squads should be competitive this season but pre-season friendly results count for nothing except to build on fitness, team structure and confidence. There are stronger teams to play in the coming weeks so let's see what results we get then.
