RAIN AND WIND BLOWS AWAY ANY CHANCE WE HAD.

RAIN AND WIND BLOWS AWAY ANY CHANCE WE HAD.

Malcolm Boyes14 Nov 2014 - 08:09

Let's hope it's not so windy on Saturday at Badgers Sports Ground.

Not so sweet for the Crows.
For the second game on the trot, the teams ran out onto the pitch with a strong, blustery wind blowing from one end to the other and as on Saturday, the chances of seeing any free-flowing, attractive football, from either side, went out of the dug-out.
The home side had a former ex-Crow, Wes Tate, in their line up and for the away side Clarke was named in the starting eleven for the first time since returning from injury and Dave Adams was selected to replace the absent Tom Boddy at centre half, therefore, making his first appearance since returning from semi retirement.
As you'd expect, the playing conditions for either side were not brilliant, the pitch being sodden and heavy in places and the wind just added to the difficulties but all players did their best to entertain the attending fans.
Eastbourne United AFC adapted to the conditions better than the Crows initially and Collick was forced in to action early on to keep the score even, a double save from Taylor was truly top class. Lucas Mann proved to be an annoyance all night and had a couple of chances early on but they were spurned however, the warning signs were there.
Clarke had a couple of good runs, considering the conditions, for the Crows, one of these runs resulted in a shot going over Tanner's crossbar, much to the relief of the home goalkeeper.
In the 31st minute the first, and what proved to be the only goal, was scored by Mann as, having been set free down the left, he curls a beautiful right foot shot past the despairing Collick and into the net.
Chances for the Crows were few and far between in reality, Barton and Trotter probably having the best of those that did come and as the half drew to a close, the referee started to produce yellow cards, with the home sides number eleven getting one for kicking the ball away, Barton for a foul and Treleaven getting one for protesting too strongly that Barton had been assaulted by Tanner in the home goal.
The conditions deteriorated even more and the game went on to become one of nutrition, with the home side having the advantage in that department it seemed and Wes Tate became an ever greater influence on proceedings which produced quite a few good chances for the home side to increase their lead but woeful finishing, pitch conditions and Collick in the Crows goal kept the score at 1-0.
At only one goal down you're always in the game but the Crows cause is not helped as Cameron is injured and replaced by Ridley, who slotted into a rather unfamiliar right back position, for him anyway. Trotter receives a yellow card for a challenge as the pressure was mounting on the Crows goal.
In an effort to get back on even terms on 73 minutes Waterman is replaced by Funnell but it's United who threaten again, Mann hitting the post with a tremendous shot. They did eventually manage to get the ball into the net for a second time when their number eleven heads in from close range after a great move but his sorry night in front of goal carried on as the assistant referee's flag cut short the celebrations.
Adams, who had a solid night throughout, was replaced by Charlton on 87 minutes and after a good 5 minutes of added on time, referee Smith brought the proceedings to a halt and the home side progressed to the next round instead of the Crows.
Not a great game to watch in truth and not one of the Crows best performances but considering the conditions the players put in a good shift and we now move on to play Cray Valley PM on Saturday at the Badgers Sports Ground, where three points will wipe away any memory of this game because in the bigger picture, that's what matters more.
All we can hope is that it's not so windy although we can imagine it will be heavy as there was sand in some areas when we played there a few weeks ago against Erith Town.
