CRUSHING DEFEAT FOR THE CROWS

CRUSHING DEFEAT FOR THE CROWS

Malcolm Boyes31 Aug 2014 - 08:32

Despite good performances against Sevenoaks Town and Tunbridge Wells, the Crows put in a poor show against Beckenham Town.

Visitors do a high five.
Many of you I'm sure can remember some of the old medicines we used to be given when we had an ailment that tasted absolutely disgusting and when we complained were told that it may taste nasty but will do us good in the end.
This match report, I'm afraid, will be like tasting one of those old remedies as it can't be sugarcoated and will have to reflect on what was a very disappointing performance from the team in this game.
Beckenham Town, as I tweeted before kick off, looked a fit, strong and quick side, and that's how they played throughout the ninety minutes. We, however, were slow out of the blocks for some reason, lost every 50/50 tackle and were second to every ball, therefore, chasing it for the entire first half.
They picked up every spare ball and it's hard to say really how good they were as against how poor we were, which has an affect either way, depending on who you support. However, the end result is that we lost 5-1 at home and were made to look way out of place in this league, which I personally believe is not actually true.
From the kick off the away side threatened the Crows defence and after 11 minutes number nine for Beckenham, Ramsamy, burst through the home defence to be one on one with Czanner but he shot narrowly wide.
Had the away side's forwards not been so eager to beat a rather square defence by getting themselves consistently offside, then the Crows could have found themselves losing earlier than they did.
In the end, after 16 minutes, Humphries put the away side 1-0 as he finally beat the offside trap, rounded Czanner and rolled the ball in to an empty net. It was no more than they deserved and was something the watching spectator felt was bound to happen.
The away side thought they may be facing 10 men when Czanner fouled the on rushing forward on the edge of the area but he was just booked and eventually saved the free kick by knocking it over the bar for a corner.
The Crows' players were doing their best to get a foot hold in the game and you can't say they weren't putting the effort in but too many of their passes were either inaccurate or short of pace and they could not hold on to the ball long enough.
The away side were still dominating and nearly went 2-0 up after 29 minutes when from a corner, the ball is headed against the post, the rebound is then headed goal wards again for Rich to block on the line and knock the ball on to the post again and ended up getting a headache for his efforts.
In the 37th minute Humphries made it 2-0 to Town and and even then it looked a long haul back for the Crows if they were indeed going to get anything out of this match and the half time whistle blew with the visitors in a comfortable position.
For the Crows, Waterman replaced Roberts during the break and the home side started the second half as they really should have started the first, quicker tempo, closing people down more effectively, taking better control of the ball but as it seemed that they would make more of a game of it, they shot themselves in the foot.
Trotter and Barton got themselves in an awful muddle, both going for the same ball, which eventually fell at the feet of Humphries who strode towards the goal before shooting past Czanner after 50 minutes, thus making it 3-0 to Town and he completing his hat trick.
The Crows did earn themselves a penalty, in the 55th minute, as Ridley forced his way in to the Town penalty area and was brought down by a defender, thus giving Barton the chance to dispatch the kick past 'keeper Nash to at least give the scoreline an air of respectability, at 3-1, even if it was only for a short space of time.
In an effort to change the shape and fortune of the Crows side, goal scorer Barton was replaced by Boddy after 61 minutes but it was 4-1 only four minutes later when Humphries was allowed to run through the middle again and to lob the now shell-shocked Czanner helpless.
The Crows made their final substitution on 66 minutes, Charlton replacing Butler, however, Town were now rampant and sensing they could score at every opportunity and were dominating play therefore, it was no surprise that it was soon 5-1 as Humphries took advantage of a lucky bounce and duly converted from close range for his, and Town's, fifth goal after 73 minutes.
The game then really petered out with the away side happy to play keep ball and the Crows having to do a lot of running and chasing, therefore, the final whistle blew with Town winning 5-1.
The team played so well away at Sevenoaks Town, played not too badly at home to Tunbridge Wells but this was definitely not the performance of a side representing Crowborough Athletic. Why that is, I don't know, but the performance did lack passion and pace which is very unusual for a Crows team.
It is something that the management team are keen to address I would guess as to why the team appeared to be off the pace throughout but it is something they have to address sooner rather than later if we are to be able to compete in this league.
