Crowborough Athletic came back from second-from-bottom Mile Oak with all 3 points after a less than convincing performance, extending Dave Adams’ unbeaten start as manager to 7 games.
After going down to 10 men within 13 minutes, Mile Oak defended well to keep the dominant Crows out first half, and the visitors had to wait until 81 minutes for substitute Charlie Ottway to scuff the ball in from close range.
After being booked after 10 minutes, Oak captain Steve Porter received his marching orders minutes later following hauling down Sam Carrington, who was causing the home defence all sorts of problems with his pace upfront.
Crowborough nearly broke the deadlock on 17. Adams’ cross from the right picked out Chris Ransome, whose well-executed overhead kick was well kept out by the diving Aaron Stenning. After that, Scott Treleaven’s long throw picked out the towering Adams, whose header was pushed over the bar by Stenning.
Then Rob Gordon’s long drop kick downfield played in Carrington, who found himself through on goal, but his scuffed attempt was comfortably gathered by the opposing keeper.
Just before the interval, Dan Tear stroked the ball down the line to Treleaven, who from a close angle saw his drive saved by the feet of the diving Stenning.
In a more even second period, the crows came inches away from taking the lead when Treleaven’s blocked strike fell to Carrington, who from a tight angle, beat the diving Stenning, but only for his low drive to rebound against the near post.
After that, Gordon’s long drop kick was flicked on by the towering Carrington into the path of substitute Ottway, who took the ball away from Chris Paine and Joe Whiting, but only for his drive to be saved by the diving Stenning.
Mile Oak then had a long spell of pressure. On 70, Peter Martin’s cross picked out Clay Lamont, whose header was excellently pushed away from goal by Gordon. Moments later, Mile Oak came even closer to taking the lead. Nick Lansdale played the ball into the Crows penalty area found Lamont, whose low drive beat the wrong-footed Gordon, but was kept out by the near post.
Crowborough then bounced back, and again went close to going a goal up on 72. Carrington’s excellent ball found Treleaven on the left, who cut inside Paine, but his rasping drive was well saved by Stenning.
Nine minutes from time, Boro broke the deadlock. Thom Nowell’s free-kick from the left wing was dummied by Carrington, and Ottway’s scuffed effort from close range bundled past Stenning and into the far bottom corner.
Crowborough now host Hailsham Town on Saturday, before playing Chichester City on the 13th March at the Crowborough Community Stadium.
