Crows suffer away defeat playing for most of the game with 10 men

Paul Boggis13 Feb 2013 - 14:03

Crowborough did not enjoy their first ever visit to Dorking Wanderers on Saturday at the West Humble recreation ground in the shadow of Box Hill in Surrey. Least said about the facilities, opposition long ball tactics and the poor officials the better.

The home side, strengthened by the signing by several Ryman players from the surrounding area, were in no mood to give the Crows time to settle and the physical approach certainly disrupted our passing game. The early exchanges were dominated with Dorking getting repeatedly caught by the offside trap something that continued throughout the game on a regular basis but on 18 minutes they sprang the offside trap and their no 11 fired past Ben Head from an acute angle to put the hosts one nil up. At the time it seemed just a setback as both Ross Campbell and Sam Carrington had good chances blocked by some last ditch tackles and the Crows were still very much in the game.

However the game probably turned on the sending off of Harry Thompson booked after an unseemly melee in front of the home sides dugout caused by a Dorking substitute (who was also booked) refusing to allow a quick throw-in to Crowborough. This then led to manager Dave Adams being " sent to the stands " for protesting after the referee restarted the game by awarding the throw-in to Dorking. Harry Thompson almost immediately received a second yellow card for questioning the decision, no doubt still upset by what he felt was the previous injustice.

Now down the ten men it was also going to be a long difficult afternoon. The half came to an end with Ben Head making a good save down to his left hand side as the hosts tried to put the game beyond the Crows but at only on nil, they were still in it.

The second half continued in much the same vein of the first with Dorking playing long balls from the back trying to turn the back four but with heroic defending by Jack Turner making great blocks to keep the deficit down to one goal. With a little bit of luck and a better final ball the Crows could have made the home side suffer but on a sticky pitch, despite good movement by Sam Carrington and Tom Saunders and probing balls from Scott Taylor and Sam Saunders,, the ball did not run kindly.

On 57 minutes Dorking got their second goal after a scramble resulted in the ball being put in the net by Rob Osgood to deflate the Crowborough players. The 10 mewn of Crowborough still created chances in the Dorking goal area and the ball was cleared off the line twice in quick succession. The introduction of substitutes, Callum Ridley and Chris Ransome for Scott Taylor and Ross Campbell (who had taken a nasty collision with the perimeter fence in the first half and was lucky he was not more seriously hurt) resulted in a change of formation with the Crows playing three at the back.

Ben Head made another fine save but on 80 minutes disaster struck as a cleared corner fell to Dorkings Jake Hill who hit it first time and it screamed into the top right hand corner giving Ben Head no chance whatsoever. The remainder of the game saw Dorking trying to fake injuries and fouls and a more mature referee could have easily produced a number of yellow cards.

An afternoon to forget for many reasons.
