Local derby day for most teams.

Still all to play for at the top and for the play off births.
As usual we’ll look at the games in alphabetical order so we kick off with:
AFC Uckfield v Crowborough Athletic and as many of the 165 present might have thought, the result went the way of the away side by a 6-0 margin. On a difficult pitch, which only just passed the pitch inspection, goals from Murrain, Vowles, Hyland (2) and substitutes Hopkinson and Feasey kept the Crows right in the fight for top spot as they sit third but with either one or two games on the two teams above them.

Not a lot can be said about the AFC Varndeanians v Saltdean United match except to say it finished 0-0 in front of 197 spectators. The only other thing to note is that Proto-Gates was sent off for the home side in the 89th minute with a straight red.

The furthest East South Coast derby of the day between Bexhill United v Little Common finished 2-0 to the away side in front of 337 fans. Two first half goals from Lambden and Thoms were enough to secure the win.

Probably the truest form of an “East” South Coast derby was played at the Saffrons between Eastbourne Town v Eastbourne United Association in front of 687 spectators. A first half strike by Greig and two second half goals from Hull and Davies, the latter scoring in the 98th minute, meant the points went to the Town.
The result definitely keeps them in the mix for a play off birth but with only an outside chance of top spot, whilst United’s play off hopes were all but extinguished.

Haywards Heath Town entertained Hassocks and won the game 2-0 with goals from Daniels-Yeomans in the first half and Napper in the second half, in front of 647 fans. The home side are now sixth in the table, whilst the Robbins are three points better off in fifth but have played one game more. Therefore, Heath still have the chance of a play off birth if the Robbins falter in any of their remaining matches.

Loxwood v Horsham YMCA ended up 2-2 in front of 86 people. The away side were twice in front through goals by Harrison and Roberts but the home side fought back each time when Britland and Law scored for them.

The West South Coast derby saw Newhaven take on local neighbours, Peacehaven & Telscombe in a match played out in front of 705 fans. In a game that, according to reports, was pretty even, it took until the 96th minute for the winner to be scored, Tuck with the all important goal with a header from a long throw.
That left the home side in second place behind Steyning Town, who they have to play again, so they have a chance of finishing top in the end or end up in a play off place.

Perhaps not surprisingly, when you look at the home sides recent record, saw the Pagham v Midhurst & Easebourne match finish with a 1-1 score line. Johnston put the home side 1-0 up in the first half but Hamilton equalised for the away side early in the second half in front of 137 fans.

Shoreham entertained the league leaders Steyning Town in front of 203 spectators and it was the away side who came out on top with a 2-0 away win. A first half goal by Shooman and a second half strike by Da Costa proved to be enough to keep them at the top and in pole position to be champions.
However, they have yet to play Newhaven again and Crowborough Athletic, if they win their games in hand, can overtake them and seal top spot.

So there is still plenty to play for in what promises to be the most thrilling of finishes to the 2023/24 Premier Division season.
