The Dockers are the next visitors to the nest of the Crows

Malcolm Boyes19 Jan 2014 - 10:37

This coming Saturday, 25th January, Newhaven FC are our visitors for a Sussex County Football League, Division 1 fixture.

Newhaven FC sit ninth in the SCFL, Division 1 table as this article is written following a 0-0 draw against Ringmer FC at Fort Road on 18th January. However, they do have a home game scheduled for 22nd January in the SCFL, Division 1 when Hassocks FC visit for a 7:45pm kick-off.
Newhaven FC have recently undertaken a restructure of the club which, despite leading the club to successive promotions, has led to Paul Harrison and Steve Knight leaving the Dockers. They say the restructure was necessary to support the development and sustainability of the club and therefore, they have appointed Lee Brace and Kieran Collins as joint-managers, with Mark Pulling joining as Player/Coach.
Grantham Chatterley, who was with us a few seasons ago, will keep his position as coach, which he held under Paul Harrison and Steve Knight, and will work with the new team accordingly.
Their team which played Ringmer FC was; Jake Buss, Jayson Sowter, Shane Collins, Sean Breach (c) (Luke Gedling), Ryan Knight, Conor Sidwell, Lee Robinson, Karly Akehurst, Craig Bunch (James Rhodes), Ryan Bradley (Mark Pulling), Tyler Goatcher. Unused subs: Daniel Murray, Jason Goddard.
They had three players booked by referee David Ellis and they were; Buss, Collins, Goatcher.
One of the substitutes who came on against Ringmer FC was Luke Gedling who some of you may remember played for us for a short spell when we had our season in the Ryman Isthmian League, South Division. Whether he starts or is a substitute it will be good to see him again and we wish him well but hope the three points come to us.

Brief history of Newhaven FC
Newhaven FC is one of the oldest clubs in Sussex, and was formed by the Towner family who were brewers in the town during the latter 19th century, plus some of their enthusiastic friends. A meeting took place at the Bridge Hotel in December 1887 when it decided to form the Club and 20 members signed up on the day.
Newhaven FC are one of the founding members of the Sussex County Football League, joining in 1920 but it was not until 1948/49 that any silverware of note found its way to the Dockers’ trophy cabinet, when the club won the Sussex County FA Invitation Cup.
In 1950/51, Newhaven FC finished in fourth place and in 1953/54 won the League, ahead of Rye United and Cuckfield. Although finishing fifth the following season, success eluded Newhaven FC and the club was relegated to Division Two in 1964/65. Newhaven FC made an immediate return as runners-up to Horsham YMCA, only to be relegated again two years later.
Newhaven FC once again returned to the top division in 1971/72, and won the Division One championship in 1973/74, finishing two points ahead of Littlehampton Town. Just two years later though the club was relegated for a third time.
After fifteen years in Division Two, the club was promoted to Division One as champions in 1990/91, and in 1992/3 finished sixth. The following year Newhaven FC won the Sussex RUR Cup, only to be relegated in 1994/95. Further relegation to Division Three followed in 1998/99 and the club narrowly escaped dropping down to the East Sussex League the season afterwards.
In the 2004/05 Newhaven FC made it to the Final of the Vernon Wentworth Cup, losing to cup specialists Rustington though.
Newhaven FC remained in Division Three until 2012, when they beat local rivals Saltdean United to the League Championship on ‘Goals Scored’. The Dockers also completed a league and cup double with victory over Saltdean in the Intermediate Cup Final.
2012/13 saw Newhaven FC finish as runners-up in Division Two meaning a second consecutive promotion and a first return to Division One since 1995.
