Crowborough 2-0 Ashford

Crowborough Athletic continued with league action knowing they faced a far sterner test than earlier in the season. The Crows had won the away fixture against Ashford United, but since that meeting their opponents had climbed steadily up the table and arrived in confident form. With a strong and vocal crowd inside the ground, the atmosphere was excellent from the outset, and it was clear both teams had brought their A game for what promised to be a competitive contest.

The match burst into life almost immediately. Just two minutes in, Crowborough felt they had a strong claim for a penalty when an Ashford defender appeared to handle the ball in the box as he went to ground. With the ball still in play, the referee waved away the appeals and the game continued. Moments later the Crows carved out the first real opportunity of the afternoon, working the ball into a dangerous position only for the final effort to drift wide of the target.

Crowborough’s bright start soon paid dividends. In the fourth minute the hosts struck first through Tom Pearson following a corner. The delivery into the box caused problems for the Ashford defence and Pearson reacted quickest inside the crowded area, turning the ball home to give the Crows an early lead and lift the energy around the ground.

The home side continued to press. By the ninth minute Lyons nearly doubled the advantage with a determined run into the box, but his effort carried just too much power and ran beyond the far post. The match developed into a frantic contest as both teams looked to impose themselves, with the pace of the game remaining high.

Ayoola had a promising opportunity in the 19th minute after being played through with a lovely pass, charging towards goal before seeing his shot fly just over the bar. Ashford showed they were still a threat themselves and created a chance on 24 minutes, but their effort drifted wide as the contest remained finely balanced.

As the half progressed Crowborough continued to find openings. Lyons produced an ambitious effort in the 36th minute after collecting a long ball and driving forward, his shot sliding narrowly wide of the post. Reed then delivered a dangerous cross two minutes later which the Ashford goalkeeper managed to gather under pressure. At the other end Grant ensured the Crows remained ahead when he produced a strong save in the 43rd minute to deny the visitors.

Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, Crowborough struck again. Jack Lyons stepped up to a free kick on the edge of the area and curled a superb effort over the wall and beyond the goalkeeper, a blinding strike that doubled the advantage at the perfect moment just before the break.

The second half began with the same competitive edge. Forster was thrown to the ground early on without a foul being given, though the Crows were awarded a free kick shortly afterwards in the next phase of play.
A moment of controversy arrived shortly after when a Crowborough free kick dropped into the area and appeared to cross the line from the perspective of many inside the ground. However, following a collision in the box the referee halted play and the goal was not awarded. Following this, Pearson, who had sustained a cut to the brow had to be relieved for Ajao as not even the blood shirt would save this one.

Ashford pushed forward as the game moved into the closing stages, but Grant once again showed his quality in the 82nd minute with an excellent save from a dangerous free kick. The visitors did pull a goal back in the 87th minute, setting up a tense finish as seven minutes of added time were signalled.

Despite the late pressure Crowborough held firm. Backed by a fantastic crowd and a committed performance across the pitch, the Crows secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory and another important three points.
