The Crows take their first draw of the season in a rain-soaked battle at the Community Stadium

A lively home crowd and a strong travelling contingent from Margate set the scene for a dramatic afternoon at the Charles Century Community Stadium. The weather began with promise, but the sunshine soon gave way to wind and rain, conditions that mirrored the shifting momentum of a fiercely contested 2–2 draw.

Margate showed their intent early, firing a warning shot high and wide in just the third minute. Crowborough responded with pressure of their own but found it difficult to break into the visitors’ box. Chaos soon followed as swirling wind and frantic play created a handful of scrappy moments at both ends, including a brave clearance from Turner after Holmwood’s punch left danger lingering in the area.

A defensive miscue almost cost the Crows on 13 minutes, but Bodds was alert to clear off the line. The warning signs went unheeded, and a minute later Margate’s number 11 found space to send a dipping effort over Holmwood for the opener.

Crowborough refused to fold. Pearson and Laing linked well up top, and the equaliser came on 32 minutes, Goldsmith reacting quickest in the box to tap home after sustained pressure. Margate’s physical approach began to surface, with late challenges and off-the-ball tussles punctuating the half. Smith received a yellow card on the stroke of half-time following a push in the back, a decision that came amid several similar challenges throughout the first half on him. It reflected the growing intensity of the contest as the teams went into the break level at 1–1.

The Crows flew out of the blocks after the restart. Just two minutes in, Forster curled in directly from a corner to put the hosts ahead. The lead could have been extended soon after, with Goldsmith narrowly firing over following back-to-back corners.

Holmwood and Turner combined to keep Margate at bay on the hour mark, while Pearson’s yellow for crossing the ball after the whistle left the home support bemused. The game’s intensity continued to rise, tackles flew, tempers flared, and the slippery pitch only added to the chaos.

With Pearson replaced by Aiye in the 72nd minute, Crowborough continued to press. Pringy came inches from a third before Margate began to mount late pressure of their own. Holmwood pulled off a fine save on 75 minutes, but as tensions peaked and Margate continued to press aggressively, both Turner and a opposition player received yellow cards in the 82nd amid the frenzy. The visitors persistence paid off five minutes from time when a Crows defensive mistake allowed the Margate 11 come back onto his left to curl a shot into the far top corner, an equaliser to make it 2–2 in the 85th. We waved goodbye to the lead but we knew given stoppages there was still 10 minutes in it and all to play for.

Players were dropping all over the pitch, fouls went unpunished, and emotions spilled over as both sides battled through. In the 88th minute, Forster was replaced by Lambden. By stoppage time, the match had descended into near-circus levels of intensity and it was hard to watch as Margate came alive with relentless attemps in the final minute. However, the Crows held firm to take a hard-earned point.

Full-Time: Crowborough AFC 2–2 Margate

There’s always the temptation for “shoulda, woulda, coulda” chatter after a game but both teams delivered a strong, strong performance, and the scoreline reflected that. Crowborough can hold their heads high knowing they matched their opponents’ intensity, played with spirit, and maintained composure even as tempers flared. In the end, it was a brilliant display of competitive football, and the Crows can take pride not only in their performance, but also in showing that sportsmanship is just as important as the result.

Having personal connections to Margate made this fixture particularly exciting. It was nice to see both teams out there giving their all, and it added an extra edge to the matchday for me.
So, a gritty display, full of heart and determination, saw the Crows take their first draw of the campaign. It may not have been pretty, nor peaceful, but it certainly was an entertaining (and wet) afternoon!
